Teachers Make a Difference

What is the difference between expert and experienced teachers? This paper, by New Zealand academic John Hattie, focuses on the qualities of excellence of classroom teachers.

"As has been noted in the USA in recent years, it is by such a focus on the attributes of excellent teachers that more faith is being restored in the public school system - which has taken a major bashing."

Hattie and colleague, Dick Jaeger, have identified five major dimensions of expert teachers:

  • can identify essential representations of their subject
  • can guide learning through classroom interactions
  • can monitor learning and provide feedback
  • can attend to affective attributes, and
  • can influence student outcomes.
