  • The four key themes of social and emotional development
  • Expected developmental progress across each of the key themes through all phases of childhood, from birth to young adulthood
  • The role of social and emotional development in the achievement of optimal learning outcomes for students and the influence on participation and engagement in schooling.
Unit 2

  • Characteristics of responsive practices, effective programs and targeted interventions for individual or groups of students.

Follow up activities

It is expected that participants will engage in the following activities between the face-to-face components of the two units in this module.  The information gathered by teachers will be used as the foundation for a significant part of activity undertaken in Unit 2.  Information about this requirement will be provided during the first unit.  Participants may choose to investigate:
  1. Consideration of the implications of social and emotional developmental information for the participants in terms of either identifying local student and community characteristic or needs, and setting directions for adapting personal or school practices; OR
  2. Planning and implementing strategies that incorporate information about social and emotional development as an integral part of data gathering and design of approaches to learning and teaching.

Participants will be provided with classroom and whole school community contexts for developing their understandings about student social and emotional development.
