Senior Teachers Value Training Experience

SENIOR teachers play a vital role in schools and this is being fostered by a professional learning program with more than 350 current participants, with more are being encouraged to apply.

Professional Learning Institute consultant Jodie Matthews said the program supported teachers’ to access the classification while gaining an understanding about the requirements of the role.

“It is designed to enhance teachers’ professional practice and capacity related to curriculum and pedagogical skills, and to support ongoing career pathways,” Jodie said.

Feedback from participants highlighted the usefulness of the program.

"The sessions were very informative, well programmed and allow great professional discussion amongst great colleagues." Mt. Helena PS teacher Denise Sullivan from Mount Helena Primary School said.

Others appreciated that the program dispelled myths.

"The information covered today has certainly clarified concerns that I had about what is expected of a Senior Teacher.  I am actually keen to learn more," Carine SHS teacher Trish Merson said.

The four module program can be completed by attending face-to-face workshops or through participation in online courses.

“Teachers who attend the program have the opportunity to develop closer networks with other senior teachers performing similar roles.  The online option provides teachers with the choice of using hard copy or electronic resources, in addition to regular contributions to an online discussion forum,” Jodie said.

“This forum provides an opportunity for teachers from a variety of teaching contexts in different geographical locations throughout WA to interact, sharing valuable career experiences in a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

“Each element of the program draws upon and expands the effectiveness of successful initiatives related to Department policies and priorities.”

Senior teachers undertake teacher-leadership roles in schools, using their expertise and strengths to support whole school planning and their teaching colleagues’ work.  School roles are negotiated with the principal.

The Professional Learning Institute’s Coordinator for Quality Teaching, Linda Markovic said “Feedback received from the 350 teachers currently participating in the program suggests they are more confident about their professional knowledge, expertise and skills in supporting student learning and whole-school planning as a result of participating in this program,”

Currently there are 6 135 senior teachers in the Department’s teaching workforce.

“The Department recognises senior teachers play a significant role in the provision of quality teaching by undertaking a range of additional tasks requiring their contribution inside and outside the classroom,” Linda said.

“Senior teachers’ duties focus on instructional support and mentoring to assist in the professional learning of other teachers, particularly teachers entering the education system such as graduate teachers, re-entry teachers and overseas-trained teachers.”
