Support for Single Gender Classes Project
What's happened so far?
Professional Learning for teachers is underway with Unit One of Module One examining:
- the purpose of the project;
- clarification of the role of participants; and
- the development of a shared
understanding of the aims of the project.
Comments from participants included:
- "I have had a few long-held beliefs/myths, busted. A mind shift is definitely on".
- "The highlight of the PD was the
networking with other schools and activity based sessions which promoted
discussion".
Module One Unit Two focused on:

- action learning and action research;
- relevant research and its implications for classroom practice;
- specific issues and appropriate steps for action; and
- evaluation procedur es, presented by Karen Trimmer.
Comments from participants
included:
"Improving Educational Outcomes'
jigsaw activity consolidated the learning process required by students and also
in how we should be dealing with staff"."ACTION LEARNING - enjoyed learning about this. Making links/realising how I can do more of this".
"Developing productive pedagogy: schools should give much greater emphasis to leadership in pedagogy - not simply leadership in management".
What's coming?
Module 2 is planned for 4 August with the focus being the "Sharing of practice" with participants:
- sharing their action learning with each other;
- engaging in a facilitated question and answer forum on Single Gender Education with Simon Reid, Principal, Cloverdale PS ; and
- examining a variety of research articles to suit their needs on issues related to single gender education.
Teachers meet to plan for the Single Gender Classes Project underway in five secondary schools.
